Hello Harringay Ward, Below is some crime prevention advice relating to fraud and bogus callers. BOGUS CALLERS - They may pretend to be reputable tradespeople to try and convince you to have unnecessary work carried out, or to accept a service they offer.
- They may ask for payment upfront or offer to assist you in withdrawing money.
DISTRACTION BURGLARS - They pretend they are someone they are not in order to enter your home to steal.
- They may pretend to be from a care agency, or utility company, or ask to enter your home quickly.
- They may work in teams to distract you while theft takes place.
ADVICE: - Use door viewer to see who’s there. If you open the door put the chain on first.
- Always ask for ID and check it with the company before letting someone into your home.
- Use the phone number in the phone book/online, as the number on their identity card could be fake.
- Genuine callers will not mind checks. If you feel unsure, schedule a time for the caller to come back when a friend or relative is there.
- For pre-planned appointments with utility companies, a password scheme can be set up.
In an emergency, or if the crime is ongoing, please contact 999. Kind regards, HARRINGAY SNT |
